Winter is almost upon us, and so with the weather getting cold(er) and wet(ter) and sunset getting earlier, our weekday practice has now moved from Tuesday evenings to Monday evenings.
The time: Starts 7pm, but get there by 6:45pm if possible to warm up and chuck around; finishes 9pm but we hang around at the rugby club bar for a while afterwards.
The venue: Hove RFC, Hove recreation ground [click here for a map]. There are changing rooms and showers available at the rugby club, plus a bar for post-practice drinks.

We are proud to have a number of Brighton Ultimate players who have been picked to play for various Great Britain Ultimate squads, and have the potential to represent GB at the upcoming 2007 European Ultimate Championships in Southampton this July. The players are as follows:
Great Britain Open – Thomas “Roach” Roach
Great Britain Mixed – James “Waggle” Houghton, Ham “The Hamdler” Roushanzamir, Richard “Gash” Harris
Great Britain Junior Open – Ryan “GB Ryan” Tarascas
Great Britain Masters – Doug “Dougie” Milne
Update:
Great Britain Junior Women – Lola Denham and Erin Brownbill

There are also some current & former Brighton-based players playing for other teams at EUC2007 – Inese Birgele is representing her home country of Latvia in the women’s division, and Johanna “Lethal” Weppen and Alizé “Bob” Clough are playing as ‘foreign‘ guest players for the Belgian women’s team.

Good luck to all the Brighton people at EUC!

All too suddenly the Mixed season has come to an end, but it ends with Brighton Ultimate acheiving their best ever Mixed Tour result. At MT3, our first team did exceptionally well, and only very narrowly missed out on an appearance in the final – winning 4 out of 6 games and eventually coming 3rd. They also ended the season in 3rd place overall in the Mixed Tour!

Brighton 2 had a tougher weekend, losing a lot of games by a slim margin, and eventually finishing 12th. It’s a testament to Brighton 2’s performance earlier in the season though that they finished in the top 12 at MT3 despite losing all their games. They still retained a great position of 10th overall in the Mixed Tour however (the best 2nd team by 12 places), which is an excellent result.

Last year our final Mixed Tour standings were 7th and 28th (although we then finished 3rd and 20th at Mixed Nationals), so to improve this to 3rd and 10th is awesome. Apparently having 2 teams in the top 8 at MT2 was the best any true geo-team has done (IF achieved it as well last year).

Hopefully we can carry this success on to the Open Tour and the debut UK outing for the Brighton Women’s team in a couple of weeks.

Well done to everybody who was involved in the Mixed Tour this year (especially the girls who had been playing for less than a year and suddenly were playing ironwoman against some of the best players in the country!), and many thanks to everyone who helped with coaching, captaining, transport, line-calling, finance, and filling Gash’s bag with pistachio shells.

Brighton Ultimate 1 and 2 continued their success in the Mixed Tour last weekend, coming 6th and 8th respectively.

Brighton 1 were seeded 8th, and moved up to 6th after finishing 3rd in their pool. They won their cross-over to stay in the top 8, and then beat Brighton 2 to put them in the 5/6 playoff. Unfortunately after a tough and hard-fought game they lost to Locomotive Leeds, but still ended up two places above their initial seeding.

Brighton 2 were seeded 13th (after moving up from 23rd at Mixed Tour 1), and soon moved up into the top 8 by winning their pool (despite only having 4 ladies and having to play 3 men/4 women more often than not), and then beating Bristol Plastic Factory in their cross-over to secure a top 8 place. This put them up against Brighton 1, but after a close game they lost and went into the 7/8 playoff against BAF. Another close game with a great comeback from Brighton, but they couldn’t take it all the way to a win; nonetheless they still finished in the top 8, making Brighton not only the only club with two teams in the top 8, but Brighton 2 the highest 2nd team by 16 places.

Great work everyone who played at the weekend, and props to the women who played ironman (or ironwoman, rather)! Hope your legs aren’t feeling too bad today…

Congratulations to the Mohawks‘ women’s team – aka The Squaws – who had an amazing weekend at the University Women’s Outdoor Nationals, winning all their games and coming first! They comfortably beat Skunks (Southampton University) 9-3 in the final to become national champions.

Squaws UWON 07

We’re lucky to have some of them playing for Brighton at Mixed Tour 2 this coming weekend – hopefully we can continue where we left off and get two teams into the top 8!

Whoah, I finally put some photos on the Photos page!

Brighton had a strong showing at the first Mixed Tour of the season in Cardiff last weekend. Brighton 1 had some tough games but retained a top 8 position, and an under-seeded Brighton 2 had a very successful weekend, winning all their games (including a grueling final game against Curious Bacon that went to sudden death) to achieve their best possible position at this Tour – 13th. After these great results were are looking forward to the next Mixed Tour in 2 weeks, and are anxious to show the top teams that there’s a reason we’re the only team with two squads in the top 16!
